A Detailed Look at the New iPhone 4S

We take a close look at the iPhone 4S prior to its UK launch on 14 October 2011 ...

The new iPhone 4S was launched at an Apple Special Event on 4 October 2011 which was the first major presentation for new Apple CEO Tim Cook. Mr Cook has a tough act to follow, after the much respected and admired Steve Jobs, who sadly passed away on 5 October 2011, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. The iPhone 4S is undoutedly a very important product for Apple, which is continuing to expand and has opened new stores in China and Hong Kong. Apple now has 357 stores worldwide in 11 countries. The good news for Apple is that there is plenty of market still to go for, as the iPhone only has 5% of the worldwide handset market, a market which consumes 1.5 billion units annually. The current iPhone 4 is the world's number one smartphone and is also number one for customer satisfaction, something no doubt that Steve Jobs would have been very proud of.

iPhone 4S Features

Quick Summary:
- Powerful new dual-core A5 chip for much snappier performance, and excellent gaming performance.
- Much better camera. It's 8 megapixels compared to the iPhone 4's 5 megapixels, and Apple has had a serious overhaul of the optics.
- Has both GSM and CDMA, making it suitable for roaming when abroad, i.e. world phone capability.

Dual-Core A5 Chip

New dual-core A5 chip gives the new iPhone 4S much more power than the single core iPhone 4. It's the same chip that is used in the highly successful iPad 2. The phone itself should be much more snappy and responsive, and you should notice the difference when web browsing or gaming. Apple believes that web pages will load twice as fast. Being dual-core, the A5 chip can display graphics up to seven times faster than previously, so keen phone gamers are going to absolutely love it. President of Epic Games, Mike Capps, took part in the iPhone 4S presentation, and showcased the company's Infinity Blade 2 game, which will be available on 1st December 2011. Frankly, the graphics performance is mindblowing for a mobile phone, but don't just take our word for it, check it out for yourself in the trailer below. During his presentation, Mike mentioned how the graphics are powerful enough to display light rays, and you'll see a good example of this at 18s in to the trailer. Pretty awesome we think you'll agree, and it's amazing how this level of reality is now available on a handheld device.

New iPhone Chip has Fantastic Battery Life

The best bit is that all this processing power comes along with good battery life, as the A5 chip is very power efficient. Apple is quoting 8 hours talk time on 3G, or 6 hours of 3G web browsing, or 40 hours of listening to music. That's pretty impressive and another big tick in the box for most smartphone users.

Upgraded 8 Megapixel Camera

The 4S has an all new 8MP camera and optics. Apple have understood the importance of the camera to many smartphone users, and upgraded it to 8 megapixels, which is a substantial upgrade over the iPhone 4's 5 megapixel camera. Note that the iPhone 4S's main rivals, the Galaxy S2 and the HTC Sensation, both have 8MP cameras.

The lens in the 4S is a custom lens five element lens for sharper pictures. It also has a larger f/2.4 aperture, which lets in more light so that your photos look brighter. The larger aperture also gives better low light performance.

Apple have also made a number of improvements to the processing capability of the camera, such as auto white balance, colour accuracy (thanks to the Hybrid IR system), face detection and motion blur reduction. Enhanced photo editing capabilities have also been added, so you can now crop, rotate, remove red-eye and enhance images directly on the phone without the need for a computer.

Apple has taken on board how important camera functionality is to smartphone users. The smartphone is something you have with you all the time, which has probably helped the existing iPhone 4 become the most popular camera on Flickr, beating all the DSLRs and point and shoots.

The iPhone 4S promises sharp contrasts and richer picutres, and is pitched to compete with point and shoot cameras. Much of this is thanks to the new CMOS sensor which gathers more light and is much faster. Apple says that their smartphone is much quicker at taking photos than its rivals, quoting 1.1s to take a picture on the 4S, compared to 2s on the Galaxy S2 and 2.1s on the HTC Sensation.

The iPhone 4S can take pictures in 3264 x 2448 resolution, so you can print out an 8 x 10" glossy photo that is pixel perfect.

HD Video Recording

The iPhone 4S also adds 1080p HD video recording, something both its main rivals can do. There's also real time video image stablilization and noise reduction.

New iOS 5 Operating System

Apple's bills iOS 5 as the world's most advanced mobile operating system, and has added 200 new features. Areas of new or upgraded functionality include notification centre, iMessage, Newsstand, Reminders, Twitter, Camera, Photos, Safari and going PC Free.

There's a new iMessage service, which let's you send unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to anyone else who has one of these devices. This is aimed firmly at BlackBerry's BBM service.

Another point that Apple wanted to stress are that there's no need for computer to administer your device. Gone are the days when you first had to connect your iPad to a computer, now you can get everything done directly on the phone, including software updates and backup (with the help of iCloud).

iOS 5 will be available as a free update on 12th October 2011. As well as the iPhone 4S, It's compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd and 4th generations, iPad and iPad 2.

Improvements to Antenna and Wireless Enhancements

The iPhone 4S Can intelligently switch between its two antennas for transmit and receive. Hopefully the antenna performance of the iPhone 4S will be good, as we all remember the embarrassing antenna issues Apple had with the iPhone 4.

With help from the new chip, Apple is also expecting real world data download speeds to increase, with speeds being up to twce as fast as before (up to 7.2Mbps theoretical maximum).

The theoretical maximum upload speed is also doubled from 7.2 to 14.4 Mbps.

World Phone Capability

The new iPhone can deal with both GSM and CDMA mobile phone standards, meaning it can roam onto most networks around the world. The previous iPhone 4 was limited in this respect.

Siri Digital Assistant

Apple Siri

This is where things start to get a little "futuristic", as Siri is billed as a personal assistant that can answer your questions. You can't ask it anything though (maybe one day!), and Apple gives you a guide of thethings you can do. Siri is integrated into the text messaging, memo, e-mail, weather, clock, setting alarm and the stock market price functionality of the phone. The artificial intelligence will allow you to use different phrases to get the phone to do something. Things you can ask Siri to do include send an e-mail or text, read your e-mail to you, set an appointment, tell you what the weather's like or tell you hos the NASDAQ is doing. You can also ask Siri for directions.

Voice recognition and artificial intelligence are difficult technologies to implement, and whilst the Apple presentation was impressive, we will have to see how well it works in practice.

Further examples of Siri usage are:

- You can put up a geofence (a geographic area on a map) so Siri can remind you of stuff when you leave locations.

- Search Wikipedia just by asking. Apple is partnered here with search specialists WolframAlpha.

- Ask it for currency conversions.

- Ask it jow many days until a particular event, e.g. Christmas.

Siri Incorporates Dictation

This is an area we are excited about, because it will allow you to get data onto the device fast. If like us, you find smartphone keyboards (impressive as they are) incredibly annoying, then dictation might be a salvation. However, it's all going to depend on how good the voice recognition is, but it's a great feature to see.

You can use the speech to text capability to write a text message, e-mail or note, or dictate your web search terms. It's also integrated with third party apps, so you can dictate Facebook updates or Tweets. Note that the Samsung Galaxy S2 also has some dictation and voice command capability built-in, with the Voice talk App powered by Vlingo, which also allows voice command calling, dictation of text messages and memos. However, from the presentation, it looks as though the Apple implementation of dictation is deeper, as they are saying you can use it anywhere there is normally a keyboard. If it works well, it will be cool, and very useful, as long as you aren't too self-conscious about talking into your phone.

iCloud

Apple iCloud Logo

This uses wireless technology to provide a central repository for all your important content, e.g. photos and documents, so that you can instantly share them between your Apple devices. You can use iCloud to store and share music, apps, docs, photos, mail, contact and calendars.

iCloud also offers easy Backup functionality, a critical area of functionality now that people's digital lives are so important.

AirPlay

AirPlay lets you wirelessly stream content to other devices.

AirPlay mirroring will mirror what's on your phone onto another device, e.g. your Apple TV, making it useful for presentations.

Making Phone Calls

Oh yeah, you can also use the iPhone 4S to make phone calls!!!

Competitors to the iPhone 4S

The main competitors to the iPhone 4S are the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation. These are both Android Smartphones running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. You could probably argue endlessly about whether Android Gingerbread or Apple iOS 5 is better. One thing we will say is that as Apple has a proprietary operating system, one advantage is it's good at making its products work well together, and this has been further improved with the introduction of iCloud. Making technology work effortlessly is something that Apple has been focused on, and this can prove an attraction for less techie users looking for a solution that "just works".

Should You Upgrade to the iPhone 4S?

Having looked in detail at the iPhone 4S, we would say that if you care about having a responsive smartphone experience, the answer is a yes. If you like mobile gaming the answer is a resounding yes. Apple has bought customers a major upgrade, even if it did choose to call it the iPhone 4S rather than the iPhone 5. The tech posers might be upset it doesn't look any different, but under the skin this is an all new phone which offers a very real performance increase over its predecessor.
